I Mustache You A Question

As we all know, the monsoon winds and rains have been heavy upon us for the past few days. What I thought would be an awesome week of no classes and fun was only met half-way. Yep, we didn't get classes. But fun wasn't there either, sadly. Luckily for me, (and a vast majority of us, I believe) there was a roof above my head, food on our table, and my family's been with me through the whole ordeal. Others are a bit unluckier. Floods ravaged most of Metro Manila and along with it, the things that many people hold dear.

They say every cloud has a silver lining. It's true in most cases; just like this one. It's funny how it takes one disaster to unite our country men to move and help out each other irregardless of social standing and class. I've seen people from all walks of life moving together, no prejudices, to help out others in need. I think a new twist to a common saying is needed: "Divided we fall, United we stand".

In the spirit of helping, all is not good news. As sad as it is, there are some people who take the opportunity to give more credit unto themselves than what they actually deserve. Using these times of calamity as a platform for popularity and fake integrity is a bit disturbing. No offense, but I've seen people seemingly shout out to the world that they're helping. I mean, it's not a bad thing. I guess it would be ok to get some credit for the good things you do. But that wasn't the case. I've seen people tweeting fake reports, wrong images, false news, and more other things that actually cause more distress than help. Tweeting images from Ondoy's time just to get 50 retweets? Spreading news about a widespread Meralco black out? Not cool man.

Forgive me for the harsh observations. But you can never deny these things. I applaud anonymous donors who give out without acknowledgement. It doesn't make them any greater than the people who also give out. However, it does make the sincerity of the help given much more believable.

How about you? Did you help out of sincerity? Or out of popularity?

I mustache you this question.

This is merely an observation. A cloud of thought that's been bugging my brain for the past few days. I mean no disrespect to anyone.

A Date For Three

Nicole and Aivan. They look like a couple, really. HAHAHA KIDDING.

Mirror shot. Great photobombing by Nicole Santos. Lol.

These are the fabulous sesame seeds grinder of Yabu. The smell is just heavenly.

Ordered their Rosu Katsudon Special. And the cabbage salad is just pure love!

Wacky faces.

Not your usual traffic-infested Ortigas streets.

Bloggers in action. HAHA!

Aivan snacking on a donut while trying to get Wi-Fi connection.

The magazines won't read itself, you know.

Nicole, also desperate for Wi-Fi. HAHAHA

The obligatory group shot. Smile!

Last July 19, Nicole, Aivan, and I planned on having lunch at Yabu in The Atrium at Megamall. Kelly was suppose to go with us but wasn't able to because he had work that day, unfortunately. We also planned to shoot Aivan's new line of pop art shirts that are seriously awesome, really. The day was long and the sun was behind the clouds; the day couldn't be more perfect.

Ordered loads of cabbage salad from Yabu. Really, it's the only place that can make me finish my veggies. Honest! Then after lunch, we went to the overpass near St. Francis Square to do the shooting. The whole thing was spontaneous, unplanned, but totally exciting. People were staring, no doubt. We actually thought the guards would restrain us from continuing the shoot, but lo and behold, they did not! Then I remembered,  we were not in Makati. HAHAHAHA.

After a few minutes of shooting, we decided to grab donuts since all three of us started running low on camera battery. Chilled in J. Co Donuts while they were scouting for Wi-Fi. Never really continued the shoot after wards. HAHA. But it was a fun day nevertheless.

Will post the product of our shoot soon!

Three Cheers for Cheap Thrills

As many people (I think many are. Lol ) are aware, I used to spend a lot on clothes. Like, a lot. And since my parents encourage saving up for something we like, I'd usually have to spend days of filter feeding and water dieting back in high school just to be able to buy shoes from Topman or those nice shirts from Zara. It was no easy task. The benefits were great though; we got skinny as a result. Back in the days, if you were gay and skinny, you're fabulous. So we, the skinny bitches, would go shopping for stuff and look great at the same time; it's a win-win situation. Or if I'm lucky, I'd get sent all these fabulous jackets by my aunts from abroad; even if the jackets were meant for countries that lie on the northern hemisphere. It was a comfort disadvantage but definitely a style advantage. And a popularity raiser too. I remember having one of my motorcycle jackets being borrowed by my friend in the other section. After recess, it would be in another section. It's the same case after lunch. I'd have to trace my jacket not only in other sections, but also in the other batches for safe measure. But that was in high school. And with the price of fashion getting higher than my allowance, I had to find a way to sustain my craving for new pieces without sacrificing a whole week's worth of recess and lunch.

Then someone introduced me to thrift stores. Oh God, the glory of thrift stores! Where have they been all my life? I was actually reluctant at first; the shops made me sneeze like hell and wreaked of old clothes. But once I spotted the vintage Givenchys and the old Diors among the Bossini pants and Chinese clothes, I was sold! It found it insane and mind-boggling how these fabulous clothes end up in places like this. I felt like I was rescuing long forgotten luxury and bringing them back to life. It was surreal.

So now, what I'll do is share these fabulous finds and maybe inspire those people who think that fashion has to be expensive to be fabulous; not that it isn't true, but then again, a cheaper alternative is always better. I'll be posting stuff I found that's sure to inspire the fashion adventurer in you to dive in to the experience and maybe, just maybe, get awesome stuff like I do.

I got these boots from a thrift store near SM Centerpoint. I remember squealing in delight when I saw them. I was eyeing these particular boots on mrporter.com, a website that's basically my dream closet. These are around $200 on the website. I got to haggle it from 700 pesos to 450 pesos. And in such pristine condition! Gosh, amazing.

Now these 2 glasses are some of my recent acquisitions from the Super Sale Bazaar. Online, these would fetch around $150 to $275. Even more! So when I saw that these glasses are 250 pesos and 150 pesos respectively, I just couldn't say no! It's insane, I'm telling you. And it looks so vintage too!

These rings, however, ain't really that cheap. It's from Forever 21. But since the rings I usually buy hit 400 pesos to 700 pesos, I think it's only fair that I consider these cheap since it's 160 pesos for 3 pieces. Not bad. Not bad at all.

When I saw this leather envelope/clutch in a thrift store, I just had to have it. I've seen many of these kinds of bags in bazaars and I'm telling you, they're 600 pesos and above. So when I saw this and found out it's only for 200, I grabbed it and paid. It's now one of my fave bags because the leather is so soft. And it's not the type of leather that feels cheap. Amazing, really.

There are so many things in my closet that I got for a really cheap price. It's amazing how the universe seems to provide me with all the things I want but for a really, really, really, lower price. It's like I'm cheating fashion; the hundred dollar look for a huge fraction of the price. A lot of fashionable people will attest to this. So if we could find things like these, definitely so can you.

It's just a matter of looking at the right places.

And haggle, my dears. Haggle, haggle, haggle.

What Happened to Personal Style?

I woke up today earlier than usual since it was the first day of school. Usually, a student from UST's College of Fine Arts and Design would don a white v-neck polo, black slacks, and a snazzy pair of black leather shoes. During the hell weeks, eyebags and paint splattered polos were mandatory. But for the rest of the year, the former description of our uniform works for everyone. Among the masses of students wearing ill-fitting polos and over-sized slacks, there are a certain few who seem to make an effort to look decent enough by wearing good fitting uniforms and nice jacket or bag. And then there are those rare individuals who seem to be hell bent on letting their personal style shine; even with the uniform's communist appeal. Well, I'm one of those people.

I always believed that everyone has an innate sense of style; a personal taste that only applies to them. It doesn't really have to be involved with clothing. The influence of one's personal taste goes beyond clothing; his food, the friends he make, his choice of interior design style and so many more. As I said, it's on a personal level. But of course, there will always be external factors that will influence the choices we make. The standards and norms of society will always play a huge part in the way we choose things. Moreover, media also plays a huge role in the process of choosing. People nowadays seem to pick what media sensationalizes and veer away from the things that are deemed taboo, unconventional, and, for lack of better word, weird. But is weird really bad?

I've met amazing people over the past few years that I can honestly say has their own personal sense of style. These are people who, whatever they wear, seem to convey a single style executed in hundreds of different outfits but retains the essence of the wearer. Sometimes they wear trends but it still translates to a look that is definitely theirs. They own the trend and not the other way around. Risk takers, they often are. Experimental, yes. But not too drastically. These are people that I look up to. Only a few gifted individuals seem to pull of a style and call it as their own. Then when their style becomes popular thanks to social networking and street style blogs, style clones begin popping up in huge numbers. Suddenly everyone's a dandy, a prep, a hipster or whatever else style identities.

It's when people lose themselves in the pursuit of looking so different and standing out that they seem to look just like everyone else. When I started doing a style blog back in 2009, the people I encounter seem to really own their style. Brands did not dictate how one should look. Their clothes came from all sorts of places and prolific brands were a few of them. Vintage, thrifted,  borrowed, DIY, all these things are a testament that personal style is achieved and not bought. Personal style was indeed personal style; it wasn't copied from a clothing brand's catalog. Looks came out of the mind and not out of the computer. Unfortunately, the world is now occupied by style clones and outfit looks alikes; wearing the same stuff from the same store. The brand is now the influencer. What happened to the creative process of choosing your clothes and coordinating them? Looks are readily available to copy online now. It's what I would call a sort of "artificial imagination"; someone else providing you with a look. All you have to do is copy it.

Furthermore, with the street style trend booming, brands have taken advantage of this opportunity to advertise their products. I'm not saying it's a bad thing though. But when brands give you clothes you didn't pick and wear it with something you have, is it safe to say that half of your outfit is not by your personal style? And when you buy an item from a brand, you'll definitely have something that thousands of others have too. So what will set you apart? It's not bad that brands give you clothes, definitely. But when you wear everything from a particular brand, isn't that sort of exchanging your personal style with the brand's own style? A bit like selling your soul to the devil; in a fashion-related of course.

The emergence of street style blogs have given fame to many people. And in a society like ours where attention is given only to the best of the best, many crave for the perks it gives and the popularity it generates. Street style blogs capture personal style at its rawest; spontaneously on the street with no idea you'll be photographed. However, it's this culture of being photographed and being seen that seem to fuel a person's sense of fashion. Some people dress to be photographed and compromise their personal style in the process. During the fashion week, it seemed that the audience has become the show itself; donning outrageous outfits, not necessarily stylish and in good taste, in the hopes of being photographed. But when someone dresses up for the camera and not for himself, could it be considered personal style?   The idea of street style blogging is that the outfits captured are in its truest form; not Photoshopped, spontaneous, unready. If the people being photographed are prepped up and camera ready, isn't it defeating the purpose?

My friend and I were discussing this awhile ago. If people dress up in a brand for a brand, for the sake of being photographed, or for the sake of showing off and publicity, would it be considered personal style? It seems that people with personal style nowadays are rare and/or unheard of.  The question remains: what happened to personal style?

P.S. This is just an opinion; a realization of things that bother me at the moment. We are all entitled to our own opinions but if you would like to give yours, please do so in a civilized and in an educated manner. I don't judge the type of people I mentioned in this entry. I simply observed and gave my two cents.

TSITP Theme Wear Shoot BTS. And Me, Flying.

What happens when you put a pageant shoot, outrageous costumes, loud make up artists, fasyon best friends and an achrophobiac boy? Dude, it's pure entertainment!

The CFAD candidates with the theme wear I made for them. Matt, the Greek altar boy and Chelsea, the swaggeriffic Warrior of Greece. Yes, I made those. Stress forever! HAHAHA

The other candidates. Hanging near the ledge. I swear. Everytime someone sits or even stands near the ledge, it gives me a heart attack. Makes my heart skip a beat. Thank you, acrophobia, for replacing love. HAHA CHOS.

Went for a laidback look today. It was pretty hot so less layers, more comfort!

Outfit Details:

Take 2. Wonder Woman takes flight and Darna trips on her cape.

 Ryan, forever fierce.
And me. Forever Alone. CHOS. HAHA
Chelsea and Matt. Super proud of these two. Seriously.

The other candidates. CHECK OUT THOSE WINGS!
Chelsea and Matt. I looove this shot. Even if it called for me to lie on the ground. HAHA Dedicated!

The theme wear shoot for the TSITP went nicely even if there were some delays. Bongga yung costume ng iba. I had to make these ones on my own. Stress Drilon! But nevertheless, I think they pulled it off quite well, don't you think?

Heights may make me sick and nauseous but it well never kill my dedication. Naks.

PFW Day 1

Me and my brother's rack of outfits ready for speedy dress-ups and camera action!
And the shoes are lined up and good to go too! Brogues, plimsolls, high-cut sneakers, military boots and old oxfords. Talk about diversity!
So this is what greeted us for the first show: LONG LINES. Typical. Sucks for those wearing high-heels and (ehem) real tight combat boots. HAHA!
Team Preview! Forever Chic and Fabulous as always! From what I heard, Daryl was wearing a mullet dress straight out of Chris Diaz's collection for that season. And Andre's Celine bag was just divine!

Models. Gorgeous, skinny models. Love love.
Me and Joma posing for someone who took our photo. Mind you, the faux fur I was wearing was surprisingly light! My brother got fur balls just by sitting next to me. LOL! And I had a leather jacket underneath. CRAZY!
Joma and photographer Lois messing with the menu. Haha!
Went straight to Shakey's  at Boni Circle for some post-show dinner.  Pizza and spaghetti! Yum yum!
Practicing pouts for tomorrow's show. Hahaha!

More crazy fur action! I kept leaving trails of hair everywhere. HAHA!

So that was it for our day 1 in PFW. Watched the 10 Fashion Show featuring Thomasian designers. Woo! Thomasian pride. HAHA! And then watched Men's Wear too. Saw some pieces which I really loved. Headed on to the show of Gerry Katigbak, Arnold Galang and Chris Diaz. Amazing as usual. Love Chris' pieces the most and the Arnold Galang platforms were amazing! And Gerry Katigbak's was sheer genius. Love, love, love.

Since my camera was being a bitch, some photos were blurry and I didn't really feel like taking that much photos anymore. And aside from sitting through the shows (which gave me a lot of butt pain LOL), I had to endure stuffing my feet into a pair of DM's one size smaller than my feet. Oh well, fashion usually isn't comfortable anyway. LOL.

Headed on to Shakey's at Boni Circle (yeah, it's far from MOA) so that our houses are just within reach afterwards. So far, it's been an awesome, awesome day. Can't wait for the next days!

In a Land of Grace

Kristel and I taking photos of each other coincidentally. NOT.
The old and new SC planning. CHOS. We were watching a movie. HAHA So much for planning.

WWII Jeepneys! COOL!
Where we slept. Well, where we watched all night actually. Till I fell asleep. HAHA.

They have a private lake! Comes with crocodiles. Kidding LOL

Can I just say? Graceland in Tayabas, Quezon is pretty awesome. Seriously. Lakes, rope bridges and deer bitches. DEER! And white picket fences. LOVE.
So tiring.
The old and new presidents of the SC.
And a bonfire. HAHA

Last April 27, the school peeps and I headed to Graceland to have some sort of planning for the next school year. Well, honestly, the planned while I took it as a form of small vacation. Of course I helped too! (though not really haha) And it was awesome. It was my first time to be around a bonfire and roasting marshmallows! I felt like a boyscout. HAHA. The last time I was here, I was running around drenched in sweat because of our leadership camp. But now, it's a vacation. Life's good. Definitely.

On our way home, we decided to stop by a church that's seriously wicked. Will blog about it soon!
